Corner Unit
A corner unit is a piece of furniture that is designed to fit into the corner of a room and can add aesthetic appeal to the room while providing extra storage space for items of your choosing.
Other thing that makes a corner unit so useful is that it utilizes the space in a niche of your house that nothing else would properly fit into and especially in small apartments where storage is so important, it makes use of vertical space, providing you with extra storage without sacrificing your square footage.
The material, shape and design of a corner unit is limited only by your imagination as corner units can be made of glass, wood, porcelain, metal or plastic to name a few and can have as many shelves, drawers, cupboards etc. as you would like.
Typically corner units are used for TVs, DVD players and other such electronic and multimedia items; most of them will have drawers or cupboards as well, which provides hidden storage for those items you would like to keep out of sight.
There are however display corner units that are used mostly for vases, pictures, artifacts or whatever other item you would like to have exhibited; others are designed to be hung on the wall like a kitchen cupboard so you still have useable space underneath.
If you decide that a corner unit is something that would be of use in your home then there are a few options available to you; you can buy plans for a pre-designed corner unit which will outline all the materials you will need and give you detailed instructions on how to proceed, you can buy a ready-made unit, you can meet with a carpenter and custom design one specifically for your needs or if you have the carpentry skills for it, you can design and build one from scratch.
If you are going the DIY route, then you will first need an outline of the unit, preferably on paper. Decide on the corner that you are going to use, measure it up so you know how much space you are working with and then put your plan together; will it have shelves, drawers or cupboards?, will it be a hanging unit or will it go from the floor to the ceiling? These are some of the questions that you need to settle when drawing up your plan.
The design you choose will determine the kind of tools and the amount of materials that you will need; the requirements will be different for a free-standing corner unit than for one that will be attached to the wall.
The color that you choose to paint your corner unit will determine whether your eyes are immediately drawn to it and it becomes a centerpiece, or if it blends in and becomes a part of your walls; whatever color you decide on it is best to paint your unit before installing it to prevent getting unwanted paint on your walls and floors.
